Archive for September, 2009

Lisa received an email yesterday from our sales agent with a firm possession date for our new house; October 16, 2009 at 5:00pm.
Not too bad, only three and a half weeks away and moved up by two weeks from the speculative date of October 31, 2009.
We drove past the house yesterday just to have a peek. They’ve poured our driveway (among a few others), and I was hoping to write “Roessing, 2009″ in a corner of it, but it had already set and hardened too much. The doorbell has also been put in, and I spent a minute just ringing it and ringing it. Doors were locked though, so we couldn’t go in. Around back we were able to see that the chandelier has been installed in the eat-in kitchen area too. It looks nice.
The last term of the school-year is made of decades, not of weeks, and living through them is like waiting for the millennium.

It’s been so long since I’ve taken pictures of the house, the last ones available in the album are of framing progress. Needless to say, a lot has been done since then (June 7, 2009) and the difference is night and day.
Lisa, the kids, and I all went over to the house today and our sales agent was there to meet us and let us in. I brought along a camera to take some photos since there’s been so many changes and updates. You can see pictures of the more interesting stuff over in the House Progress gallery, such as the granite counters, bathrooms, and basement.
There’s a few “issues” that need to be fixed up, namely a couple of screws popping above the stove area, the kids bathroom doesn’t have a GFI outlet, and there’s some rough spots on the granite counters. However, none of these are difficult to fix so the builders should be able to take care of them quickly. Our sales agent wasn’t able to give us a firm possession date yet, but he did speculate that based on the progress and stage that it’s at he wouldn’t be surprised if it was ready in a week or two!
God I hope so.

It’s been a while since posting much about it, but we were at 26 Kingfisher a couple of times this past week, and the progress has been phenomenal.
- The basement floor has been poured and leveled, and the studding is up ready for insulation.
- The furnace is in and currently the ductwork is being run along the basement ceiling.
- The indoor lighting is in and almost all of the electrical has been connected and working.
- The cabinets are all in (kitchen and bathroom).
- Yesterday we watched the granite kitchen counters get installed and they look beautiful!
- The walls are painted and the trim is stained.
One thing we were sort of worried about was whether we get sconces on the front of our garage, one on each side of the door. I was assuming no because they installed the fixture for the sconces for the front and rear entrances, but there was nothing on the front of the garage. We had chalked it up to not knowing that it was a “structural upgrade” and didn’t opt for it. Yesterday we noticed three sconces laying in a kitchen cupboard, so being a bit curious (the rear sconce was already installed leaving only one needed for the front) we went outside and sure enough there was a fixture on each side of the garage door. Nice.
Our sales agent was supposed to have a meeting with the site supervisor yesterday to try to determine a firm possession date for us, so hopefully we’ll hear back from him either today or Monday. Not only do we want to know as soon as possible when we’re looking at moving in because we’re just too excited, but I also need to know because we’re in the middle of server upgrades throughout the province. I should really be on the job with the new OS due to my Linux knowledge, and if I know enough in advance my boss can plan our trip around our move in date.

No, I don’t mean the remake of Quest for Glory II (or the original).
Yesterday I rolled in to work to something that I didn’t want to see; our server monitor was showing one of our server sites with a downed email server.
Great
I SSH in to the server to try to fire up the mail server. Failed. Not much to go with in the logs, so I figure rather than running the init script to start it, I’ll work with the executable itself. It at least gives me some more information; it can’t locate one of its .db files on the MAIL volume. Ok, no big deal, I’ll go poking around in the volume and see what’s up. Next discovery, no MAIL volume. In fact, no volumes at all.
WTF
Checking the disk partitioner shows that the EVMS container no longer exists. Long story short, I spend half the day rebuilding a broken partition table on a live server then recovering the lost data from backup tape. I learned a lot, and can honestly say I feel a fair bit more comfortable administering these SLES servers out in the field.
On a bit of a tangent, I don’t think I’ll be getting Bloodbowl. It seems that despite an earlier projected September release date for the XBox 360 version, it’s not coming anytime soon. If the October release date is more on target we’ll have other things to spend money on at the time, namely stuff for the house such as wall decorations and other neat things (Lisa took me to Home Sense this week and I really like some of the stuff they have). Besides, Dragon Age: Origins is coming out in November and it’ll be hard enough juggling my games with that. Oh yes, I do intend on getting it and I think Lisa is looking forward to it as well.
Speaking of the house, the basement is poured, dried, and level so I believe things should really move along. All of the trim around the doors and windows are up and stained, and the baseboards were laying in the kitchen when I was there on Monday. The sales agent with Qualico has a meeting with the site supervisor tomorrow and should be letting us know a firmer possession date either Friday or this coming Monday. I really hope it’s good news, such as “You can move in 3 weeks from now”!
Finally, Lisa and I have moved on from Warhammer. Too many people are leaving (Venustus and Beargrim from Royal Dwarven Marines are heading to Champions Online and Fallen Earth respectively, and I haven’t seen many guild mates in CoF on lately at all) and the Tier 4 experience seems to mostly be getting run over constantly since there are so little Order players out and about willing to actually defend anything. It’s really just getting frustrating seeing less and less people out and about, and reading blogs that used to be very much about WAR either coming to and end, or moving on to other things because the bloggers are done with the game. It’s sad because Mythic had such potential with WAR, having learned from mistakes made in DAoC and it just seems they blew it with any changes and fixes coming out being viewed as too little too late by the ex-playerbase. We’re now playing EverQuest 2 again, so you can find us as Sslizk and Kovanya on the Antonia Bayle server. I recommend giving the 14 day trial a shot, Sony has really made a lot of changes to the game to make it more friendly to new and returning players alike.
